Een geweldige dorado gevangen op de Exuma Sound.

Exuma Sound

Woensdagochtend vertrekken we om acht uur ’s ochtends vanuit George Town richting de Exuma Sound, met als doel Musha Cay zo’n 32 mijl varen. De Exuma Sound is een breed stuk water met een diepe oceaan bodem. Links van de Exuma Sound vind je de  Exuma Cays, de kleine eilandjes en de zandbanken en aan de rechterkant een aantal grotere eilanden zoals Cat Island en Eleuthera. Om bij de Exuma Sound te komen moeten we wederom een slalom parcours afleggen tussen koraalriffen en zandbanken door, om bij de uitgang te komen. Onze kaartenplotter en extra kaarten die we in George Town hebben gekocht, hebben we dan ook hard nodig. Het is een prachtige zeildag met een leuk windje van achteren, we hijsen de gennaker en lopen gemiddeld 7 knopen. We varen de hele dag langs allerlei kleine eilandjes en de dag kan helemaal niet meer kapot als we ook nog een dorado binnenhalen van 80 cm. Rond de middag vinden we de doorgang Cave Cay Cut, waar we tussen de eilandjes door kunnen en het is wel even spannend want de doorgang is niet heel diep en vrij smal. Als we eenmaal door Cave Cay Cut gevaren zijn, komen we in prachtig helder ondiep water terecht en we blijven ons verbazen over de verschillen kleurschakeringen, die we in het water zien. We gooien het anker uit achter Musha Cay, een privé eiland in het bezit van de beroemde goochelaar David Copperfield.

Je kunt het eiland huren voor 261.500 dollar per week! Het ziet er dan ook wel luxe uit, een aangeharkt strand met strandbedden, parasols en een beach bar. Helaas maakt alleen niemand gebruik van het strand! Raoul ziet een paar roggen onder de boot doorzwemmen en maakt er mooie filmpjes van. Later in de middag komt de Ile du Nord er ook aan en gooit naast ons het anker uit. Als we staan te praten zien we ineens haaien onder onze boot doorzwemmen. Raoul springt het water in om er een filmpje van te maken, maar weet toch niet hoe snel hij eruit moet komen als de haaien dichterbij komen. We zoeken de haaien op in ons vissenboek en het blijken ongevaarlijke Nurse Sharks te zijn! ’s Avonds hebben we nog een heerlijke bbq bij ons aan boord met de vers gevangen dorado!

De volgende dag zeilen we weer door de Cave Cay Cut door om terug in de Exuma Sound te komen. Vandaag staat er een zeiltocht van 20 mijl op het programma naar Staniel Cay. Als we eenmaal op de Exuma Sound varen blijkt er een redelijke wind te staan maar niet te hard, zodat we toch de gennaker kunnen hijsen. Het is wel wat sportiever zeilen dan gisteren want met zo’n enorme lap erop is het vandaag redelijk sleuren aan het stuurwiel. De Ile du Nord is vandaag eerder vertrokken zodat we onderweg foto’s van elkaar kunnen maken. Voordat we goed en wel op weg zijn hebben we al beet en laten de gennaker zakken, wat niet soepel verloopt want de lijn van de sok zit rond de radar. Als we de gennaker eenmaal naar beneden hebben blijkt de vis er nog steeds aan te zitten.

Het is een heel gevecht want het is een joekel van een vis, maar de vis springt op het laatste moment van de haak als Raoul hem in het schepnet wil doen waardoor we de schepnet verliezen. We proberen het schepnet nog te zoeken maar helaas!! Als we de gennaker weer willen hijsen blijkt hij om de voorstag te zitten zodat we een paar rondje moeten varen voordat we de gennaker kunnen hijsen. Als we in de buurt van Ile du Nord komen hebben we wederom beet en dit keer lukt het ons wel om de vis binnen te halen, het is een dorado van wel 100 cm lang en past nauwelijks in de breedte van onze kuip. Als we langs Ile du Nord varen laten we vol trots onze vangst zien en schieten mooie foto’s van elkaars boten met de gennaker op. Al met al is het een actief zeil –en visdagje!! Rond de middag varen we door de Big Rock Cut, de doorgang naar Staniel Cay. Wederom is het spannend want we kunnen de doorgang slecht zien omdat er een eiland achter ligt, we varen dus grotendeels op de kaartenplotter! Eenmaal door de doorgang komen we weer in prachtig ondiep water en varen naar een ankergebied achter een paar rotsen, waar we prima liggen. ’s Middags gaan we met Ile du Nord naar het strand bij Staniel Cay, waar Timo en Luuk op haaienjacht gaan. Vrijdag is het toch echt weer tijd om iets aan school te doen want de laatste twee dagen is het er niet van gekomen. Na school gaan we met z’n allen snorkelen bij de Thunderball Grotto, een grot met een aantal gaten in de bovenkant waardoor er lichtbundels in het waterschijnen wat een prachtig effect geeft. In de grot zwemmen veel vissen en je kunt merken dat ze aan mensen gewend zijn want ze komen heel dichtbij je, het lijkt wel alsof je in een aquarium rondzwemt. De grot heeft meerdere uitgangen en een aantal zijn onderwater, de jongens vinden het  geweldig om daar doorheen te zwemmen. Na het snorkelen lunchen we aan boord en halen daarna het anker op om achter het volgende eiland, Big major te gaan liggen waar een mooi strand is.

We hijsen de jongens om de beurt de mast in tot de eerste zaling want het waait aardig en ze maken een paar prachtige foto’s met de go pro camera van het turquoise water. Het volgende eiland is niet zover weg dus we hijsen de zeilen niet en navigeren door de smalle ondiepe vaargeulen. Eenmaal achter het eiland gekomen zien we zeker zo’n 20 boten voor anker liggen en je ligt er inderdaad heerlijk beschut! In de Bahama’s hebben we tot nu toe alleen Amerikanen en Canadezen rond zien varen maar vandaag zien we de eerste Europese boot een Duitser!  ’s Middags vinden we een mooi strandje waar tafels, stoelen, een bar en een bbq staan. Het blijkt dat een Amerikaans stel, dat al een half jaar in de baai ligt, dit strand heeft aangekleed en ze hebben het Pirate Beach genoemd. Iedereen mag ervan gebruik maken, ideaal, zeker als we ook nog een bal vinden en er volop mee gespeeld wordt in het water. ’s Avonds komt de Ile du Nord bij ons bbq’en want de dorado van 100 cm heeft 12 moten opgeleverd en 4 filetjes.

Vandaag waait het redelijk hard en de kopjes staan buiten de baai op de golven. We besluiten dan ook nog maar een dagje te blijven en doen ’s ochtends eerst school, ondanks dat het zaterdag is. ’s Middags varen we naar het grote strand waar Raoul varkens gezien heeft en we hebben erover gelezen dat ze in het water naar je toe komen zwemmen. We varen met de dinghy dicht naar het strand en jawel daar komen ze aan gerend en ze zwemmen naar ons toe. Het zijn enorme varkens en als we popcorn naar ze gooien dan eten ze dat met groot plezier op en houden hun mond open voor meer. Het is toch wel eng als ze zo dichtbij komen en met hun grote tanden, we varen dan ook snel weg! Tijd om naar het strand te gaan en wederom genieten we van de luxe van ‘Pirate beach’. ’s Avonds borrelen we na bij de buren ‘Ile du Nord’.

Zondagochtend halen we om 10 uur het anker op voor een tocht naar Warderick Wells, waar het hoofdkantoor staat van het nationale park, ‘Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park’. Het nationale park is zo’n 22 mijl lang en 4 mijl breed met zo’n 15 grote eilanden en vele kleintjes. Aangezien de zandbanken, hier iets minder ondiep zijn dan zuidelijker besluiten we vandaag om over de zandbanken naar Warderick Wells te varen. Er staat vandaag zo’n windkracht drie en we hijsen de grootzeil en genua. We hijsen Luuk de mast in tot de eerste zaling en schieten wederom foto’s van de Ile du Nord en zij van ons, hopelijk zijn er wat mooie foto’s bij! Het water is overal zo’n 4 tot 6 meter diep en we hebben het gevoel dat we over het IJsselmeer varen, alleen is het water hier zo mooi lichtblauw! Halverwege de middag zijn we er al en ankeren een behoorlijk stuk van de kant omdat het allemaal erg ondiep is. Als we naar het stand willen doet de bijboord motor van Ile du Nord het niet dus besluiten we maar op onze boot te zwemmen en te borrelen. Raoul hangt de spinnakerboom aan de mast vast waardoor de kinderen van de boot kunnen slingeren, wat altijd een groot succes is! ’s Avonds hebben we nog een heerlijke currymaaltijd waar de laatste stukken dorado in verwerkt zijn bij de buren op ‘Ile du Nord.

Als we de volgende dag wakker worden is het grijs en grauw. Via het weersbericht op de marifoon hadden we al begrepen dat er een front overkomt en het zou gaan regenen. Na school ziet de lucht er donker uit maar we besluiten toch om naar het kantoor van het park te gaan om meer informatie te krijgen over het park. Het kantoor staat aan een prachtige baai waarin de mooringen in de vorm van een hoef liggen met een zandbank in het midden. Jammer dat er vandaag zulke donkere luchten hangen anders zou het een fantastisch plaatje zijn!! Er zijn nog een aantal mooringen vrij en tegen een bedrag van 20 Bahamian Dollar kunnen we eraan gaan liggen en met nog 15 Bahamian Dollar voor het internet zijn we dan helemaal klaar. We gooien het in de groep maar we hebben geen van allen zin om de boot om te varen met dit weer en het lukt Timo uiteindelijk toch om een internetkaartje te bemachtigen, kunnen we voorlopig onze e-mails weer eens checken.

Op het eiland zijn een aantal wandelingen uitgezet en we lopen de ‘bekende’ BooBoo trail, door een droog stuk eiland met een droge vegetatie. Op zich wel aardig maar niet spectaculair. Binnen een kwartier staan we aan de andere kant van het eiland met uitzicht op de oceaan. Aangezien het begint te regenen lopen we snel weer terug naar de baai waar we kunnen schuilen. Als we denken dat de regen over is springen we in de dinghy maar we krijgen halverwege alsnog een plens regen over ons heen.  ’s Middags checken we bij internetcafé ‘Ile du Nord’ onze mailtjes onder het genot van een kop koffie! Als ik ’s avonds het groente afval over boord gooi blijken er haaien onder onze boot te zitten en het zijn dit keer geen nurse sharks. Het zijn typische haaien met een soort kieuwen aan de bovenkant. Het worden een beetje onze ‘huishaaien’ want ze zitten de rest van de dagen klaar onder onze boot om het afval te eten als ik het overboord gooi!

Als we dinsdagochtend wakker worden straalt de zon weer zoals gewoonlijk en staat er nauwelijks wind. Het wordt een heerlijk dagje en na school gaan we met z’n allen snorkelen bij de Emerald Rock. Tot nu toe zijn we nog weinig leuke snorkelplaatsen tegengekomen in de Bahama’s en we merken dat we aardig verwend zijn! Uiteindelijk zitten er redelijk wat vissen bij Emerald Rock en door het heldere water kun je de vissen fantastisch goed zien. We varen na het snorkelen door naar het strand. Alicia van de Ile de Nord haalt vandaag haar diploma Bahama A zoals haar ouders het noemen. Alicia doet erg goed haar best en laat zien dat ze een goede schoolslag heeft, op haar rug kan zwemmen en zelf al een beetje kan borstcrawlen. Voordat ze weg ging kon ze nog niet zwemmen en heeft dit jaar dus heel wat geleerd! We hebben dus wat te vieren op het strand. ’s Avonds nodigen we de Ile du Nord uit voor een laatste maaltijd ons aan boord en we vinden het erg jammer om afscheid van hun te moeten nemen want we hebben hele leuke weken samen gehad. Zij varen morgen richting Amerika en wij moeten zo langzamerhand weer eens terug naar Europa.

Woensdagochtend vroeg zwaaien we nog een laatste keer naar Timo, Else, Alicia en Luca van Ile du Nord en varen de baai uit. Vandaag staat er helaas redelijk wat wind en die komt ook nog eens uit de verkeerde hoek. Het begint al als we de doorgang bij Warderick Wells doorvaren. Er staan hoge golven in de ingang en we krijgen redelijk wat water over. Eenmaal op zee wordt het wat rustiger en hijsen we de zeilen. De wind is inderdaad noordoost zo’n 15 knopen en we moeten er recht tegenin. We kunnen dus niet de koers varen waar we heen willen maar moeten aan de wind opkruisen, wat al een tijd geleden is voor ons. De oversteek naar het eiland Eleuthera, 29 mijl varen duurt dan ook langer als gepland en is ook redelijk oncomfortabel. Gelukkig nemen de golven halverwege de tocht af omdat we achter de zandbanken van Eleuthera komen. Uiteindelijk varen we rond vijf uur de ondiepe Rock Sound in waar we voor het stadje Rock Sound het anker uitgooien. We zijn allemaal redelijk moe en duiken vroeg ons bed in.

Eleuthera is ons laatste eiland in de Bahama’s die we aan willen doen en gaan ons vanaf nu klaar maken voor de oversteek naar Bermuda. We willen wachten op een goed weersmoment om over te steken naar Bermuda waar Ton onze opstapper op 11 mei bij ons aan boord stapt. We gaan heerlijk een paar dagen chillen op Eleuthera!!

Exuma Sound

Wednesday morning we leave around eight o’clock at George Town and sail in the direction of the Exuma Sound for a trip to Musha Cay about 32 miles north. The Exuma Sound is a wide deep stretch of water with on its left the Exuma Cays, the little islands and the banks and at the right hand side a couple of big islands like Cat Island and Eleuthera. From George Town it is not easy to get on to the Exuma Sound and we have to go around the coral heads and in between the reefs. We definitively need our chart plotter here and we are happy with the extra charts which we have bought in George Town. It is a beautiful day for sailing with a nice wind in the back, we raise the gennaker and sail with a good speed of 7 knots. We sail along all the little islands and we even catch a nice dorado of 80 cm along the way. How beautiful can live be!! During the afternoon we find the passage Cave Cay Cut, where we are able to get behind the islands. It is quite exciting because the cut is quite narrow and shallow.

Once through the cut we end up in beautify turquoise water again! We throw the anchor out behind Mushay Cay, which is a private island owned by the magician David Copperfield. You can rent the whole island for 261.500 USD per week. It looks quite luxurious with a nice beach, sun beds, parasols and a beach bar, but there is nobody at the beach to enjoy it! Raoul sees some rays swimming under the boat and is shooting a couple of nice movie of the rays underwater! Later in the afternoon the boat Ile du Nord is arriving and they throw the hook next to us. When we are chatting we suddenly see a couple of sharks next to our boat. Raoul jumps in the water to shoot a movie of the sharks but is climbing on board rapidly once the sharks are getting closer!! We check the sharks in our fish book and they seem to be nurse sharks. The book says that they are harmless, but for us they are still sharks!! At night we have a lovely bbq on our boat with the fresh dorado!

The next day we sail back to the Exuma Sound through the Cave Cut again. We want to go to Staniel Cay today which is only a 20 miles trip. Once out at the Exuma Sound we notice that it is blowing harder than yesterday but we are still able to fly the gennaker. The Ile du Nord left a bit earlier so we are able to shoot some pictures of each other. It is quite a sporty sailing day because with a huge gennaker the helm is more difficult to handle. We put out the fishing lines and use again the big teaser to catch a big fish. Within half an hour we have a fish on the hook and we lower the gennaker, which is not easy because the lines are stuck around the radar. Once we have the gennaker down we go on with the fishing and the fish is still on the hook. It is quite a fight to wheel the fish in and when Raoul wants to put it in our net, it jumps of and we lose our fishing net!! We turn the boat and try to find the net but unfortunately!! We raise the gennaker again which is not easy neither because it is wrapped around the forestay this time!!

When we are finally getting closer to Ile du Nord, we have another fish on the hook. This time we are lucky and lower the gennaker without a problem, wheel in the fish and have a nice 100 cm dorado on the hook. It doesn’t even fit in the width of our cockpit! When we sail along Ile du Nord we show the fish and we shoot some nice pictures of each other’s boats. All together an active sailing and fishing day! Around noon we sail through the Big Rock Cut, the passage to Staniel Cay. We still find this passage exciting as well because this time you can hardly see the passage because there is another island behind it and we sail it on the chart plotter. Once through the Cut we arrive again in nice blue waters and motor over to an anchorage area behind a couple of rocks. In the afternoon we go to the beach of Staniel Cay, where Timo and Luuk go nurse shark hunting. Timo has brought his underwater camera and shoots a nice picture of Luuk when he is walking away for a shark!

Friday we start with school because we haven’t done a lot of school lately. After school we go snorkelling at the Thunderball Grotto, a cave with a couple of holes in the ceiling where the light shines through which gives an amazing effect in the water. In the cave are swimming a lot of fishes and you can tell that they are used to humans because they come real close. It is just like you are swimming in an aquarium. The cave has several entrances and a couple are under water, which the boys like most! After the snorkelling we have lunch and we get the anchor out to move to the next island, Big Major where we should find a nice beach.

We pull the boys in the mast up to the first spreader because it is blowing quite hard and they shoot some nice pictures with the go pro camera of the turquoise water. The next island is just around the corner so we don’t raise the sails and carefully navigate in between the reefs. Once behind the island we see about 20 boats at anchor !! It is indeed a very protected bay with a nice beach. We have seen so far only Americans and Canadians around us in the Bahamas but today we see our first European boat a German boat! In the afternoon we find a nice beach with tables, chairs, bar and a bbq. It seems that an American couple, who are anchored here since November, have provided the beach with all these stuff and everybody is allowed to use it. They have called the beach ‘the Pirate Beach’. We definitely enjoy the beach and have later on a bbq at our boat to eat the dorada which we have caught yesterday!

Today it is blowing quite hard and we decide to stay another day. We do school first although it is Saturday. In the afternoon we go out with the dinghy to the beach where Raoul has seen pigs and we have read that they come out to you and swim in the sea. Once we get closer to the beach the pigs jump in the water and swim up to the dinghy. The pigs are really big and they like the popcorn which we are feeding them. They really look scary when they come to close to the dinghy and we feel it is time to move on. We dinghy over to the ‘Pirate Beach’ where we have again a relaxing afternoon at the beach. At night we are having a drink with our neighbours ‘Ile du Nord’.

Sunday morning we leave around ten for a sailing trip to Warderick Wells, where the head office is located of the national park, ‘Ecuma Cays Land and Sea Park’. The national park is 22 miles long and 4 miles wide, with 15 big islands and many small islands. The banks behind the cays to the north are less shallow and we decide to sail over the banks to Warderick Wells. There is a nice breeze today and we raise the main sail and genoa. We raise Luuk in the mast and we pull him up to the first spreader and shooting some nice pictures of Ile du Nord and they are taking pictures of us. Hopefully we have some nice pictures!! The water at the bank is all the time between 4 to 6 meters deep and we have the feeling that we are sailing over the Ijsselmeer, only the water is much clearer and light blue! It is a short trip and we arrive in the beginning of the afternoon and anchor quite far of the shore because it is very shallow. We are getting ready for the beach but the outboard engine of Ile du Nord is not working so we stay for a drink at our boat and pull the spinnaker pool up to make a swing out of it. The kids always love this and in the meantime the engine is fixed.  At night we are having a lovely curry dinner with the last bits of the dorado at our neighbours ‘Ile du Nord’.

The next day when we wake up it is grey and clouded. We have understood from the VHF weather forecast that a front is passing by and it is going to rain a lot today. After school we see a very dark sky but we decide still to go to the office of the park to get more information of the park. The office is located at a beautiful bay where the moorings are place in a horseshoe, with a bank in the middle. What a pity that the sun is not shining today otherwise it would have been a perfect picture place!! At the office we learn that there are still some moorings available for 20 Bahamian Dollars and we could get internet for 15 Bahamian Dollars. None of us wants to sail the boat over and when Timo is still getting the internet card we decide to stay on the anchor where we are. On the island you can walk different trails and we decide to walk the ‘famous’ BooBoo trail through a dry vegetation. We walk the trail in fifteen minutes and before we know we are already at the other side of the island. It looks like it is going to rain and we quickly go back to look for shelter at the office. When it stops raining we jump in the dinghy but unfortunately on our way back we get more rain!! In the afternoon we check our mails at the internet café ‘Ile du Nord’ and enjoy the coffee they serve. In the evening when I throw our leftovers over board I see some sharks (??) eating the food and they are not nurse sharks this time!! The sharks stay under our boat for the rest of our stay and eat all our leftovers!!

When we wake up on Tuesday morning the sun is shining again as usual and there is hardly any wind. It is a real nice day and after school we go snorkelling at the Emerald Rock. So far we haven’t seen many nice places in the Bahamas for snorkelling but I think we are also a bit spoilt by now. In the end we see quite some fishes at the rock and we can see them really clear because of the good visibility. After the snorkelling we go to the beach and enjoy the afternoon at the beach. At night we have a last dinner with the crew of Ile du Nord on our boat because tomorrow we have to say goodbye to them and we really enjoyed the time we spend together!! They will sail on to the USA and we are bound to go back to Europe.

Wednesday morning we wave goodbye to Timo, Else, Alicia and Luca of Ile du Nord and leave the bay. Unfortunately there is quite some wind today and it is also coming from the wrong direction. It starts already when we pass the passage of Warderick Wells. There are high waves in the entrance and we are getting quite some water over. Once outside at sea it is a bit calmer and we raise the sails. The wind is indeed north east and that is where we need to go!! We can’t sail in a straight course and we have to sail up wind, which has been a long time ago since we have done that. The crossing to the Eleuthera is about 29 miles and it takes longer than we have thought. We are happy if we get behind the banks of Eleuthera and finally arrive at the end of the afternoon in the shallow Rock Sound where we anchor the boat of in front of the city Rock Sound. We are all quite tired and go to bed early!

Eleuthera will be the last island in the Bahamas which we are visiting and from now on we are getting ourselves ready for the crossing to Bermuda. We will wait for a good weather window to Bermuda where we get on the 11^th of May Ton, our former neighbour from Rotterdam, on board as extra crew to sail with us the leg to the Azores but first we are going to chill out on Eleuthera!!
